Asphalt Truckload Calculator

Estimate whole dispatches, payload equivalents, and the final partial load from total asphalt tonnage.

Truckload inputs

Model dispatches from total material and usable payload.

How to interpret the result

Equivalent loads express tonnage divided by payload. Whole dispatches round upward because any remaining material requires another movement. Final-load weight is the remainder after full payloads.

Formula

Dispatches = ceiling(total asphalt ÷ usable payload)

Worked example

For 45 US tons and a 20-ton usable payload, the equivalent is 2.25 loads. Dispatch planning requires three trucks or trips: two 20-ton loads and a final 5-ton load.

Quick reference at 20 US tons per truck

TotalDispatchesFinal load
20 tons120 tons
45 tons35 tons
100 tons520 tons

Common mistakes

  • Rounding 2.25 payload equivalents down to two dispatches.
  • Using rated capacity without checking legal and route-specific payload.
  • Confusing truck count with delivery timing or material temperature control.

Confirm with carrier and supplier

  • usable payload, axle limits, permits, route restrictions, and scales;
  • minimum load, split-load policy, plant hours, and dispatch sequence;
  • haul time, paving rate, backup trucks, rejected load handling, and tickets.

Source and related tools

FHWA publishes a compilation of federal and state truck size and weight laws; actual legal payload remains vehicle- and route-specific. Obtain tonnage from the main calculator or parking lot calculator, and separate ordering decisions with the allowance guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I round a fractional truckload up?
For dispatch planning, a partial final load still normally requires a truck movement, so the calculator shows both fractional payload equivalents and whole dispatches. Confirm plant and carrier policy.
What payload should I enter?
Enter the usable payload approved for the actual vehicle, route, permits, loading practice, and jurisdiction. Do not assume the truck body rating is automatically the legal road payload.
Does the calculator schedule delivery intervals?
No. It estimates load count and final-load weight. Plant production, haul time, paver speed, traffic control, temperature, and queueing require a separate delivery plan.
