Asphalt Coverage Calculator

Find the compacted area a known number of tons can cover. This is the reverse of a standard tonnage calculation.

Coverage inputs

Convert available asphalt weight into compacted surface area.

Estimated coverage

82.8

square feet

9.2

square yards

7.7

square meters

Square example: about 9.1 × 9.1 ft.

2:1 rectangle example: about 12.9 × 6.4 ft.

Coverage uses finished compacted thickness. It excludes field waste, grade variation, supplier minimums, and uncompacted loose depth.

Asphalt coverage formula

Area (sq ft) = weight (US tons) × 2,000 × 12 ÷ density (lb/ft³) ÷ thickness (in)

One-ton example

Using 145 lb/ft³ compacted density, one US ton covers about 165.5 sq ft at 1 inch, 82.8 sq ft at 2 inches, or 55.2 sq ft at 3 inches.

When to use this calculator

Use coverage when you know the available load or delivery quantity and need to estimate its reach. If you know the project dimensions and need the required weight, use the asphalt tonnage calculator. For common thicknesses, compare the asphalt tonnage chart.

The output is a geometric estimate. Irregular edges, grade changes, density variation, waste, and supplier load rules can change field coverage.

Common mistakes

  • Using loose placement depth instead of finished compacted thickness.
  • Applying one fixed coverage value to every mix density.
  • Assuming the theoretical area is the guaranteed field yield.

Confirm before ordering

  • Supplier compacted density and load rounding;
  • finished thickness and total delivered weight;
  • irregular edges, grade corrections, minimum loads, and leftover handling.

Source and related tools

The FHWA density demonstration report explains that compaction increases unit weight and that asphalt mixtures made with different aggregates can have different densities. Read the compacted asphalt density guide, convert weight and volume with the tons-to-cubic-yards calculator, and document extra material with the ordering allowance guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet does one ton of asphalt cover?
At 2 inches compacted thickness and 145 lb/ft³ density, one US ton covers about 82.8 sq ft. Coverage changes inversely with both thickness and density.
Is asphalt coverage based on loose or compacted thickness?
This calculator uses finished compacted thickness. Loose placement depth depends on the mix and compaction process, so confirm construction details with the contractor or project specification.
Why does density change the coverage?
A denser compacted mix places more weight in the same volume. For a fixed tonnage and thickness, increasing density reduces the calculated area.
