Asphalt Base Material Calculator

Estimate aggregate base quantity—not structural design—from area, compacted thickness, and placed bulk density.

Aggregate base quantity inputs

Enter a project-specific placed bulk density.

Estimated quantity

Enter positive area, thickness, and density values.

Result scope and assumptions

Results cover only compacted aggregate base volume and estimated weight. Replace the starting density with quarry or test data for the specified material.

Formula

Cubic yards = area (sq ft) × thickness (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27

US tons equal cubic yards × 27 × bulk density ÷ 2,000.

Worked example

A 1,000 sq ft area at 6 inches contains 500 ft³ or 18.52 yd³. At an assumed 120 lb/ft³, that is 30 US tons before allowance.

Common mistakes

  • Treating this quantity tool as a base-depth recommendation.
  • Using an unrelated density for another aggregate or moisture condition.
  • Ignoring grade corrections, subgrade replacement, and compaction settlement.

Confirm before ordering

  • Specified aggregate designation, gradation, moisture, and placed density;
  • excavation limits, compacted depth, lift limits, drainage, and testing;
  • quarry conversion, minimum delivery, truck payload, and allowance reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this calculator determine the required base depth?
No. It calculates quantity at the thickness you enter. Base type and structural thickness depend on subgrade, drainage, traffic, climate, specifications, and pavement design.
Should density be loose or compacted?
Use the placed bulk density that matches the finished compacted layer and the project pay or ordering basis. Ask the quarry or contractor how its quoted tons relate to delivered and compacted volume.
Does the result include excavation or asphalt?
No. It reports aggregate base volume and weight only. Excavation, geotextile, subgrade treatment, drainage, asphalt, labor, equipment, and haul costs are separate.
