Asphalt Resurfacing Cost Calculator

Calculate overlay asphalt tons and combine them with local milling, preparation, paving, and mobilization quote items. The result is an estimating worksheet, not a pavement-condition decision.

Overlay quantity and resurfacing cost

Enter local material, milling, paving, and fixed quote items.

This calculator estimates an overlay quantity and totals entered quote items. It does not determine whether the existing pavement is suitable for resurfacing.

Asphalt overlay quantity formula

US tons = area × compacted thickness ÷ 12 × density ÷ 2,000

Material cost is the calculated quantity multiplied by the local price per ton. Milling, preparation, paving, and mobilization are separate entered quote items so the scope remains visible.

Resurfacing cost per square foot

A per-square-foot number is useful only when the underlying scope is comparable. Record overlay thickness, mix, tack coat, milling depth, leveling, localized repair, utility adjustments, drainage, transitions, striping, traffic control, and exclusions.

Repair, resurface, or replace?

Resurfacing is generally considered only after confirming that the remaining pavement and support can carry the proposed overlay. Widespread fatigue cracking, unstable base, movement, or unresolved water problems may require deeper repair or reconstruction. Use the pavement lifecycle decision guide before treating calculator output as a construction recommendation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the resurfacing estimate?
The calculator estimates overlay asphalt quantity and totals only the local material, milling or preparation, paving, and fixed costs you enter. Repairs, leveling, drainage, base work, markings, permits, tax, and other unentered items remain excluded.
Is asphalt resurfacing the same as an overlay?
Resurfacing often includes preparation followed by an asphalt overlay, but actual scopes vary. Milling, leveling, localized full-depth repair, tack coat, transitions, and drainage corrections should be stated in the proposal.
Can failed pavement be fixed with an overlay?
An overlay does not automatically correct failed support, widespread fatigue cracking, movement, or drainage problems. A qualified pavement assessment should determine whether repair, resurfacing, or reconstruction is appropriate.
How is asphalt overlay cost per square foot calculated?
Divide a defined resurfacing total by the measured net area. Use the same preparation, thickness, mixture, and exclusions when comparing per-square-foot quotes.
